What is this about?

How to establish a new lawn – from soil preparation to the first cut

A dense, rich-green lawn is the foundation of almost any garden design. The good news: you can sow a lawn yourself with modest tools. What matters most is not scattering the seed but thorough soil preparation – this is where it is decided whether the lawn becomes dense and even or stays patchy. The best sowing windows are mid-April to early June and late August to mid-September, when the soil is at least 10 °C and rain falls regularly.

Tools

  • Spade or power tiller
  • Rake
  • Lawn roller (rental)
  • Spreader (optional)
  • Sprinkler

Materials

  • Quality lawn seed mixture
  • Topsoil or sand for levelling
  • Starter fertiliser
  • Soil activator if needed
Instructions

Step by Step

1

Clear the area and loosen the soil

Remove old turf, stones, roots and weeds. Then loosen the soil 15–20 cm deep with a spade or power tiller. On heavily compacted or clay-rich soil, work in sand to improve drainage.

2

Level the area

Rake the area roughly level and fill depressions with topsoil. Small bumps become annoying later when mowing – take your time with this step.

3

Let the soil settle, then roll

Ideally, let the loosened soil rest for one to two weeks so it can settle. Then roll the area and finely rake the top layer once more – this creates the perfect seedbed.

4

Spread the seed

Sow on a windless day. The usual rate is 20–25 g per m² – check the manufacturer’s instructions. Using a spreader or by hand, apply half lengthwise and half crosswise for an even distribution.

Sowing in a cross pattern: spread half the seed lengthwise and half crosswise, 20–25 g per m² in total for even coverage.
5

Rake in and press down

Rake the seeds in no deeper than 0.5–1 cm – grass germinates in light and must not be buried deep. Then roll the area again so the seeds have good soil contact.

Cross-section of the seedbed: 15–20 cm of loosened soil, a fine seedbed, and grass seed as a light germinator worked in just 0.5–1 cm deep.
6

Water, water, water

Keep the area constantly moist for the first 3–4 weeks – in dry weather that means several short watering sessions per day. If a seedling dries out once, it dies. A sprinkler with a timer takes the work off your hands.

7

First cut and starter feed

Mow for the first time at a growth height of about 8–10 cm – down to only approx. 5–6 cm, never removing more than a third of the blade length. A starter fertiliser afterwards supports tillering, the formation of new side shoots for a dense lawn.

First mowing following the one-third rule: at 8–10 cm growth height cut back to 5–6 cm, never removing more than a third of the blade length.

Safety First

  • When using a power tiller: wear sturdy footwear and check the area for stones and buried lines beforehand.
  • Before deeper digging, check whether utility lines (power, water, irrigation) run through the ground.
  • Store fertiliser and seed out of reach of children and pets.

Mistakes You Should Avoid

Using bargain seed

Cheap seed mixtures often contain fast-growing forage grasses that turn patchy. Look for certified quality mixtures – the extra cost pays off for years.

Raking in too deep

Grass seed germinates in light. If you bury it several centimetres deep, you will wonder about bare patches. A maximum of 1 cm of soil contact is enough.

Irregular watering

The most common reason for failure: the area dries out in between. During germination, constant moisture matters more than anything else.

FAQ

Common Questions

When is the best time to sow a lawn?

The best windows are mid-April to early June and late August to mid-September. The soil should be consistently above 10 °C. Late summer is often ideal: warm soil, lower evaporation and less competing weed germination.

How long does grass seed take to germinate?

Depending on variety and temperature, the first seedlings appear after 7–21 days. A sown lawn is fully usable after about 2–3 months.

Sowing or laying turf rolls?

Sowing is much cheaper (approx. €1–2/m² instead of €5–10/m² plus installation) but requires 6–8 weeks of patience and consistent watering. Rolled turf is fully usable after 2–3 weeks and delivers an instant result.

How much seed do I need per square metre?

The usual rate is 20–25 g/m², i.e. around 2–2.5 kg per 100 m². More does not help: grass sown too densely competes for light and water and stays weak.

Do I need to fertilise before sowing?

A starter fertiliser with a high phosphorus content applied at sowing or after the first cut supports root development. On very poor soil, a soil analysis beforehand is worthwhile.

When is a professional worth it?

For large areas, steep slopes, poor soil (waterlogging, construction debris in the subsoil) or when speed matters, professional support pays off. We prepare the soil with machinery, lay turf rolls on request – walkable immediately instead of six weeks of waiting – and install automatic irrigation systems. Especially soil preparation with soil replacement and grading makes the difference on large areas between a lawn that lasts two summers and one that brings joy for decades.
